Ingredients

  • 175g self raising flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 75g shredded beef or vegetable suet
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 1 medium size egg, beaten
  • About 90 - 120 ml of milk.

Preparation

Grease a 1 liter pudding basin.

Mix together the flour, salt, suet and sugar.

Make a well in the centre and the egg and enough milk to make a soft dropping consistency.

Place in the pudding basin and smooth the top.

Cover with cling film (the type suitable for use in microwave ovens).

Steam for 1 hour, then top up the appliance with a further 500 ml cold water, reset the timer and steam for a further 30 minutes.

Turn out and serve hot with jam, golden syrup or cooked fruit.

Note: The pudding basin must not obstruct the steam vent holes on the lid or prevent the lid fitting securely.
